Practice Areas Corporate and Securities; Nanotechnology; Commercial Litigation
Mr. Honen focuses his practice in corporate and venture capital law, and commercial litigation. Mr. Honen provides corporate counsel to a broad spectrum of companies with a particular emphasis on emerging growth and start-up companies. He has also successfully represented companies in a wide variety of commercial litigation matters including shareholder disputes, corporate dissolution actions, and the enforcement of restrictive covenants. Mr. Honen is also acknowledged to be one of the early practitioners of nanotechnology law in upstate New York, as reported in a March 2003 article in the New York Law Journal. In 2009, Mr. Honen was named to Upstate New York's Super Lawyers list, which recognizes lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.
Mr. Honen's publication credits include acting as General Editor for the LexisNexis Practice Insights (LexisNexis Online) and as an Editorial Board Member and a chapter editor of "White's New York Business Entities" (LexisNexis Matthew Bender). He has also written many articles on business and corporate issues for local publications.
Mr. Honen has lectured extensively, particularly on topics of corporate law, venture capital and angel investing. He recently testified before a Joint Session of the New York State Legislature on behalf of Universities of Upstate New York Venture Forum (UNYTECH) in support of a proposed $25,000,000 seed stage fund for university-based start-ups. This grew out of his testimony before Governor David Paterson's Task Force on Diversifying The New York State Economy Through Industry-Higher Education Partnerships on the need for a State-sponsored seed investment fund. Mr. Honen has spoken as a panelist at the annual meetings of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) discussing "Large Company-Small Company Collaborations," the National Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Conference discussing venture investing, the Vermont Investors' Forum, the American Ceramics Society.
Mr. Honen also speaks at various continuing legal education programs sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and other groups, and has guest lectured at Albany Law School of Union University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University at Albany at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He also speaks at entrepreneurial events, such as The Entrepreneur's Network in Rochester concerning financial models and venture capital term sheets, and on a panel of venture capitalists for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Invention to Venture Program on the topic of Finding the Money. Additionally, Mr. Honen is one of the founders of, and for many years served as moderator for, SmartStart and UNYTECH Venture Forum, upstate New York's largest tech transfer/early stage forum.
